Increased ventilator use during the COVID-19 pandemic resurrected persistent questions regarding mechanical ventilation including the difference between physiological and artificial breathing induced by ventilators (i.e., positive- versus negative-pressure ventilation, PPV vs NPV). To address this controversy, we compare murine specimens subjected to PPV and NPV in ex vivo quasi-static loading and quantify pulmonary mechanics via measures of quasi-static and dynamic compliances, transpulmonary pressure, and energetics when varying inflation frequency and volume. Each investigated mechanical parameter yields instance(s) of significant variability between ventilation modes. Most notably, inflation compliance, percent relaxation, and peak pressure are found to be consistently dependent on the ventilation mode. Maximum inflation volume and frequency note varied dependencies contingent on the ventilation mode. Contradictory to limited previous clinical investigations of oxygenation and end-inspiratory measures, the mechanics-focused comprehensive findings presented here indicate lung properties are dependent on loading mode, and importantly, these dependencies differ between smaller versus larger mammalian species despite identical custom-designed PPV/NPV ventilator usage. Results indicate that past contradictory findings regarding ventilation mode comparisons in the field may be linked to the chosen animal model. Understanding the differing fundamental mechanics between PPV and NPV may provide insights for improving ventilation strategies and design to prevent associated lung injuries.

We consider a cylinder immersed in viscous fluid moving near a flat substrate covered by an incompressible viscoelastic fluid layer, and study the effect of the fluid viscoelasticity on the lift force exerted on the cylinder. The lift force is zero when the viscoelastic layer is not deformed, but becomes non-zero when it is deformed. We calculate the lift force by considering both the tangential stress and the normal stress applied at the surface of the viscoelastic layer. Our analysis indicates that as the layer changes from the elastic limit to the viscous limit, the lift force decreases with the decrease of the Deborah number (De). For small De, the effect of the layer elasticity is taken over by the surface tension and the lift force can become negative. We also show that the tangential stress and the interface slip velocity (the surface velocity relative to the substrate), which have been ignored in the previous analysis, give important contributions to the lift force. Materials are more easily damaged during accidents that involve rapid deformation. Here, a design strategy is described for electronic materials comprised of conducting polymers that defies this orthodox property, making their extensibility and toughness dynamically adaptive to deformation rates. This counterintuitive property is achieved through a morphology of interconnected nanoscopic core-shell micelles, where the chemical interactions are stronger within the shells than the cores. As a result, the interlinked shells retain material integrity under strain, while the rate of dissociation of the cores controls the extent of micelle elongation, which is a process that adapts to deformation rates. A prototype based on polyaniline shows a 7.5-fold increase in ultimate elongation and a 163-fold increase in toughness when deformed at increasing rates from 2.5 to 10 000% min-1 . This concept can be generalized to other conducting polymers and highly conductive composites to create "self-protective" soft electronic materials with enhanced durability under dynamic movement or deformation.

Leather tanning involves several processes of converting putrescible hide to stable leather resistant to harsh environmental conditions. Severe conditions such as high temperatures and UV radiation, when exposed to the leather materials, cause degradation and decrease physical, chemical, and structural properties. The effect of gamma irradiation on viscoelastic properties and stability of tanned leather against thermal and photodegradation was studied using the Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) technique. The thermal stability of chrome and mimosa-tanned leather was inferred from the peak of storage modulus graphs. Gamma irradiation of samples with low doses increased the storage modulus of chrome and mimosa-tanned leathers. Doses up to 20 kGy decreased the stability of thermally aged chrome-tanned leather. However, for mimosa-tanned, there was an increase at higher doses as a result of gamma irradiation inducing additional bonds that enhance the stability of the tanned leather. Nevertheless, there is a variation in the stability of chrome-tanned leather at different doses of irradiation.

This study investigated the effects of different durations of ultrasound treatment (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 min) on the gelatinization, rheological properties, crystal structure, short-range ordered structure, and microstructure of lotus root starch (LS). The results showed that the molecular chain swelled and entanglement increased after ultrasonic treatment, and the gelatinization viscosity increased up to (6 059 ± 31) mPa·s. Cracks, and collapses and holes appeared on the surface of starch particles, which promoted the entrance of water molecules and increase the viscoelasticity. Ultrasound treatment destroyed the α-1,6-glycosidic bonds of starch molecules, and broke some branches to form short starch chains, which were rearranged into ordered structures. The number of short-range ordered structures increased, and the R1 047/1 022 ratio increased by 3.20%. Short-time ultrasonic treatment (30 min) enhanced the interaction between starch molecules, making the double helix structure more ordered and compact and increasing the Tp and ΔH by 11.09% and 89.21%, respectively. Long-time ultrasonic treatment (40–50 min) was not conducive to the formation of ordered structures. The results of this study can provide a theoretical basis for the application of ultrasonic in regulating the physicochemical properties and multi-scale structure of starch.

Due to the widespread use of carbon nanotube (CNT)‐reinforced polymers in various industries, investigating the dynamic mechanical response of these materials under impact loading is of significant importance. A three‐dimensional viscoelastic (VE)–viscoplastic (VP) constitutive model for CNT/epoxy nanocomposites is developed. A proper rheological model is established using the generalized Maxwell model to represent the VE behavior and propose an exponential function to express the elasto‐VP response. Employing an empirical logarithmic relationship to estimate material properties at different strain rates, the VP behavior is modeled based on the overstress concept. The 3D numerical discretization of the proposed rate‐dependent material model is also carried out to develop a user‐defined material model (UMAT) for the commercial finite element (FE) software of Abaqus. The performed FE simulations based on the proposed rate‐dependent constitutive material can properly capture stress relaxation and hysteresis behaviors of the nanocomposites. Comparing the estimated tensile and shear stress–strain curves through developed material models with experimental measurements, an excellent agreement is observed. The Rivlin-Thomas classical energy balance model for tearing tests suggests that the fracture energy G is proportional to the work of the external load in the legs (potential energy), for not too large stretches in the legs, so the increase of G with loading rate is observed or measured, but not really explained by the model. Shrimali and Lopez-Pamies (SLP) have recently built a theory on viscoelastic fracture from recent experimental evidence of a critical (stretch rate-independent) stretch on nucleation of cracks in the pure shear tests. The theory in other words incorporates this evidence in an otherwise energy-based criterion. In the paper "The trousers fracture test for viscoelastic elastomers" (ASME J. Appl. Mech., 2023, 90(7), p. 071010), they seem to obtain the critical (stretch rate-independent) stretch condition for the case of trouser tests (applying their theory from a long enough crack) both in nucleation and steady-state propagation. This outcome seems reasonable since for a linear material, looking at the elastic limit cases of very slow and very fast rates, it would produce an increase of the load, and hence of the fracture energy, proportional to the increase of the modulus, which is in line with what has been found experimentally, although possibly in contrast with classical rate-independent cohesive models, at least for crack nucleation. Nonlinear rheology of Pickering emulsions is used to further investigate the nonlinear and unrecoverable transformation of inner structures, which is beyond the linear viscoelastic regime of tiny structural disturbances. Exploring various rheological methods plays a vital role in emulsion applications, such as simulating the macroscopic structural transformation between static and liquidlike flow states, strain overshoot, and regeneration for broken structures. According to our previous studies, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) Pickering emulsions are a typical system for investigating polymer-based emulsions with the auxiliary surfactant [didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB)] for enhancing CNF absorption. To further study different rheological properties by varying CNF or DDAB contents, multiple interval thixotropic test, large amplitude oscillatory shear, and concentration-time-dependent superposition are employed to study the linear viscoelasticity and structural transformation of nonlinear range. Knowledge of the evolution in the mechanical properties of a curing polymer matrix is of great importance in composite parts or structure fabrication. Conventional rheometry, based on small amplitude oscillatory shear, is limited by long interrogation times. In rapidly evolving materials, time sweeps can provide a meaningful measurement albeit at a single frequency. To overcome this constraint, we utilize a combined frequency- and amplitude-modulated chirped strain waveform in conjunction with a homemade sliding plate piezo-operated rheometer (PZR) and a dual-head commercial rotational rheometer (Anton Paar MCR 702) to probe the linear viscoelasticity of these time-evolving materials. The direct controllability of the PZR, resulting from the absence of any kind of firmware and the microsecond actuator-sensor response renders this device ideal for exploring the advantages of this technique. The high frequency capability allows us to extend the upper limits of the accessible linear viscoelastic spectrum and, most importantly, to shorten the length of the interrogating strain signal (OWCh-PZR) to subsecond scales, while retaining a high time-bandwidth product. This short duration ensures that the mutation number (NMu) is kept sufficiently low, even in fast-curing resins. The method is validated via calibration tests in both instruments, and the corresponding limitations are discussed. As a proof of concept, the technique is applied to a curing vinylester resin. The linear viscoelastic (LVE) spectrum is assessed every 20 s to monitor the rapid evolution in the time and frequency dependence of the complex modulus. Comparison of the chirp implementation, based on parameters such as duration of the experiment, sampling frequency, and frequency range, in a commercial rotational rheometer with the PZR provides further information on the applicability of this technique and its limitations. Finally, FTIR spectroscopy is utilized to gain insights into the evolution of the chemical network, and the gap dependence of the evolving material properties in these heterogeneous systems is also investigated. We study theoretically the steady viscoelastic flow in confined and symmetric hyperbolic channels considering slip along the walls. Under the lubrication approximation and a variety of constitutive models, a high-order perturbation solution with respect to the Deborah number is calculated. The solution for all the field variables (velocity, pressure, and extra-stress) is found analytically up to eighth order and is used along with proper acceleration techniques to achieve convergence up to order one Deborah number. We reveal that even in the presence of slip, the pressure drop decreases monotonically with increasing the fluid elasticity. We evaluate the influence of slip in terms arising from two different decompositions of the pressure drop obtained with the aid of the total force balance and the mechanical energy balance of the flow system. In contrast to the nonslip Newtonian flow, our analysis also showed that the fluid slip along the walls introduces variations in the strain rate at the midplane with the distance from the inlet. However, these are small, and an effective strain rate can be well-represented using a previously developed formula [Housiadas, K. D., and A. N. Beris, Phys. Fluids 36(2), 021702 (2024)]. We also show that when the solution for the midplane velocity is used in the general formula for the Trouton ratio, instead of the Newtonian lubrication solution, there are no appreciable changes, thus confirming the validity and accuracy of our previously reported results [Housiadas, K. We study theoretically the elongational viscosity (or Trouton ratio, in dimensionless form) for steady viscoelastic flows in confined and symmetric hyperbolic tubes considering Navier-type slip along the wall(s). Both the planar and the cylindrical axisymmetric geometrical configurations are addressed. Under the classic lubrication approximation, and for a variety of constitutive models such as Phan-Thien and Tanner, Giesekus, and Finite Extensibility Nonlinear Elastic with the Peterlin approximation models, the same general analytical formula for the Trouton ratio is derived as for the Oldroyd-B model, in terms of the velocity at the midplane/axis of symmetry and the Deborah number only. Assuming that the velocity field is approximated by the Newtonian lubrication profile, based on our previous study in the absence of slip, we show that a constant extensional strain rate can be achieved in the limits of zero or infinite slip. For finite slip, a slight modification of the geometry is required to achieve a constant strain rate. In these cases, the formula for the steady state Trouton ratio reduces to that for transient homogeneous elongation. We also provide analytical formulae for the modification (decrease) for both the extensional strain rate and the Hencky strain achieved in the confined geometries because of introducing wall slip. We use nonequilibrium atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of unentangled melts of linear and star oligomer chains ( C 25 H 52 ) to study the steady-state viscoelastic response under confinement within nanoscale hematite (α − F e 2 O 3) channels. We report (i) the negative (positive) first (second) normal stress difference and (ii) the presence of viscoelastic tension at low W i. With the aim of uncovering the molecular mechanism of viscoelasticity, we link these effects to bond alignment such that absorbed chains near the surface can carry the elastic force exerted on the walls, which decays as the chains become more aligned in the flow direction. BACKGROUND: Foamulsions have become increasingly popular in the food industry due to their ability to enhance the textural, sensory and health‐promoting properties of food products. This study was therefore aimed to design and prepare a novel gelled structure, foamulsion gel containing 0–600 g L−1 oil, with gellan gum (GG; 7, 10 and 13 g L−1) and saponin‐rich antioxidant Acanthophyllum glandulosum extract (AGE; 2, 6 and 10 g L−1). RESULTS: The interaction between components was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. The overrun and porosity of the foamulsion gels increased with antioxidant AGE (1.30 times) and reduced with oil (up to ca 70% and 30%, respectively) and GG levels. The systems were highly stable, and no water or oil was released during the physical stability experiments. Microscopic images showed that the size of air cells was significantly larger than that of oil droplets. The foamulsion gels based on 13 g L−1 GG and 10 g L−1 AGE had markedly higher elastic (G′) and viscous (G′′) moduli than other samples, and exhibited an elastic and solid‐like behavior (G′ > G′′). The highest gel firmness was found in oil‐free sample, and the presence of oil resulted in a lower firmness induced by the larger size and lubrication effect of oil droplets. CONCLUSION: As a result, the interactions between AGE, GG and oil could lead to the creation of new aerated structures known as bioactive foamulsion gels. In the manufacturing of optical products, precise adjustments are made to maintain the optical axis alignment of optical components, which are then securely positioned using adhesives. To achieve positional accuracy at the micron level, it is essential to comprehend the deformation of the adhesive joint over time during processing. This study focuses on investigating the displacement of optical components resulting from the deformation of a cationic photopolymerized epoxy adhesive, which cures under ultraviolet (UV) radiation. First, the conversion of the adhesive was formulated based on a curing reaction model. This conversion can be divided into three stages: the initial reaction during UV irradiation, the subsequent dark reaction, and the reaction induced by heating. Moreover, formulations were developed to describe changes in curing shrinkage, thermal expansion, and viscoelasticity in relation to the conversion. These equations, governing the adhesive properties, were then used to perform finite element method (FEM) simulations to analyze the position of the optical component. Experimental tests on adhesively bonded components were conducted under conditions identical to those employed in the simulation. Throughout the curing process of the adhesive, the optical component was continuously imaged using a coherence-scanning interferometer, enabling the quantification of its displacement from the acquired images. The results of the FEM simulation and experimental analysis exhibited a consistent trend, indicating the effectiveness of the modeling and simulation methods employed in this study. The majority of the displacement of the optical component occurred over several hours during the dark reaction stage, rather than during UV irradiation. Notably, the movement of the optical component was not limited solely to the thickness direction of the adhesive layer because of curing shrinkage but also extends to the in-plane direction because of the non-uniform distribution of the UV irradiation intensity. Bacteria exhibit swimming behavior through the rotation of helical flagellar filaments, a common mode of propulsion for artificial micro-swimmers as well. However, most studies have focused on helical filaments with a uniform radius, leaving limited research on filaments with nonuniform radii. This paper presents a simulation of the hydrodynamics of a rotating helical filament with a nonuniform radius. The degree of nonuniformity is characterized by a radius ratio, β. Using the OpenFOAM platform, a simulation module for non-Newtonian Stokes flow was developed and integrated. The kinematics of the filament were predefined by fixing either the pitch or the helical angle, in addition to the helical radius. Thrust acting on the filament were analyzed with regards to the helical radius ratio, rotation speed, and fluid viscoelasticity. Certain modifications were made to apply the resistive force theory (RFT) to filaments with nonuniform helical radii. Results revealed that when the pitch was fixed, the thrust of the helix varied non-monotonically with the radius ratio, with excessive ratios leading to increased resistance. In contrast, helices with fixed helical angles exhibited an increasing thrust with a higher radius ratio. The thrust was greater in Newtonian fluids compared to non-Newtonian fluids, and the propulsion of the helix was influenced by the Deborah number. As the Deborah number approached zero, the thrust of viscoelastic swimming speed approached that of viscous swimming speed. For small, β (, β =1 and 4), the ratio of the thrust in viscoelastic fluid to the thrust in viscous fluid was always less than unity. At, β = 9, elasticity hindered propulsion at low De (De<1.5), while the opposite was observed at high De (De>1.5). A new approach was proposed to evaluate the impact of viscoelasticity on the helix, it was expected that the new calculation method can reduce the computational effort effectively. Numerical simulation of the glass molding process and analysis of material viscoelasticity are growing increasingly significant as the research on optical‐device glass molding intensifies. An accurate and efficient analytical algorithm for the shear relaxation modulus in the viscoelasticity characterization of glass was developed in this study. We measured the high‐temperature creep curve, friction coefficient, and elastic modulus of glass (D‐LaF50) according to the requirements for viscoelasticity characterization. The viscoelastic behavior of glass was characterized based on the analytical algorithm and test results. A finite element analysis model was developed to verify the accuracy of the analytical algorithm. In this study, a novel, high content technique using a cylindrical acoustic transducer, stroboscopic fast imaging, and homodyne detection to recover the mechanical properties (dynamic shear modulus) of living adherent cells at low ultrasonic frequencies is presented. By analyzing the micro‐oscillations of cells, whole populations are simultaneously mechanotyped with sub‐cellular resolution. The technique can be combined with standard fluorescence imaging allowing to further cross‐correlate biological and mechanical information. Binder plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of sulfur electrode in lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) battery. However, cracks are easily generated inside the electrode and compromise its performance due to the volume change of sulfur during redox reaction and continuous vibration originated from the external environments. It is a challenge yet crucial to develop tough binders with crack‐insensitivity and damping performance. Herein, a polymeric binder is designed with special viscoelastic behavior by tailoring its electrolyte‐philic and electrolyte‐phobic domains. The loss modulus of the binder is regulated to be highly close to its storage modulus within a wide range of frequency, generating an ultra‐high loss factor and equilibrium of viscosity‐elasticity. Based on such rheological behavior, the binder holds 1) high damping ability across a wide frequency to suppress crack generation, 2) high toughness with crack blunting behavior to resist crack propagation, 3) efficient healing capability to repair the cracks. Besides, the pendant zwitterionic groups can immobilize the lithium polysulfides and promote ion transfer. Benefiting from these advantages, the obtained Li‐S battery delivers high specific capacity with considerable capacity retention after long‐term cycling. Inertial effects caused by perturbations of dynamical equilibrium during the flow of soft matter constitute a hallmark of turbulence. Such perturbations are attributable to an imbalance between energy storage and energy dissipation. During the flow of Newtonian fluids, kinetic energy can be both stored and dissipated, while the flow of viscoelastic soft matter systems, such as polymer fluids, induces the accumulation of both kinetic and elastic energies. The accumulation of elastic energy causes local stiffening of stretched polymer chains, which can destabilise the flow. Migrating multicellular systems are hugely complex and are capable of self-regulating their viscoelasticity and mechanical stress generation, as well as controlling their energy storage and energy dissipation. Since the flow perturbation of viscoelastic systems is caused by the inhomogeneous accumulation of elastic energy, rather than of kinetic energy, turbulence can occur at low Reynolds numbers. This theoretical review is focused on clarifying the role of viscoelasticity in the appearance of low-Reynolds turbulence. Three types of system are considered and compared: (1) high-Reynolds turbulent flow of Newtonian fluids, (2) low and moderate-Reynolds flow of polymer solutions, and (3) migration of epithelial collectives, discussed in terms of two model systems. Viscoelastic materials (VEMs) have gained increasing popularity for their ability to dampen vibrations in various structural applications in recent years. The mechanical characteristics of VEMs can be effectively described using constitutive models featuring both integer and fractional derivatives. This study examines the mechanical behavior of VEMs using fractional Zener models with four, five, and six parameters, as well as the generalized Maxwell model with 16 parameters, which relies on integer derivatives. To accomplish this, the study formulates an optimization problem with the aim of minimizing an error function defined by the quadratic relative distance between theoretical model responses and experimental data. Solving the optimization problem involves the use of a hybrid optimization technique, which combines genetic algorithms and non-linear programming. After obtaining optimal designs for each viscoelastic model, qualitative assessments demonstrate that all analytical models provide satisfactory fits to the experimental data. Subsequently, a statistical analysis employing Akaike's Information Criterion is conducted to identify the models that best describe the mechanical behavior of the analyzed VEMs. In this quantitative evaluation encompassing all viscoelastic models, it is noted that the generalized Maxwell model with 16 terms produces a lower relative error and statistically outperforms the fractional Zener models only in a global analysis. However, in a temperature-by-temperature analysis, the GMM16 proves to be inferior to all fractional models. Furthermore, when focusing solely on the fractional models, the five-parameter Fractional Zener Model exhibits the best statistical fit to the experimental data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To provide a comprehensive summary of the different modalities available to measure soft tissue fibrosis after radiotherapy in head and neck cancer patients. Data Sources: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Sciences. Review Methods: A search was conducted using a list of medical subject headings and terms related to head and neck oncology, radiation fibrosis, and quantitative measurements, including bioimpedance, MRI, and ultrasound. Original research related to quantitative measurement of neck fibrosis post‐radiotherapy was included without time constraints, while reviews, case reports, non‐English texts, and inaccessible studies were excluded. Discrepancies during the review were resolved by discussing with the senior author until consensus was reached. Results: A total of 284 articles were identified and underwent title and abstract screening. Seventeen articles had met our criteria for full‐text review based on relevance, of which nine had met our inclusion criteria. Young's modulus (YM) and viscoelasticity measures have demonstrated efficacy in quantifying neck fibrosis, with fibrotic tissues displaying significantly higher YM values and altered viscoelastic properties such as increased stiffness rate‐sensitivity and prolonged stress‐relaxation post‐radiation. Intravoxel incoherent motion offers detailed insights into tissue changes by assessing the diffusion of water molecules and blood perfusion, thereby differentiating fibrosed from healthy tissues. Shear wave elastography has proven to be an effective technique for quantifying radiation‐induced fibrosis in the head and neck region by measuring shear wave velocity. Conclusion: There are various modalities to measure radiation‐induced fibrosis, each with its unique strengths and limitations. Developing a viscoelastic model for the cyclic thermomechanical loading of thermosetting polymers is the main goal of this study. The model includes memory for residual thermal stresses and can consider stress accumulation across many loading cycles. By considering stress accumulation, we can improve predictions and understand how thermosetting polymers' stress–strain state changes under cyclic thermomechanical loading. This approach was validated through experimental verification to ensure its applicability in practical engineering scenarios. The experiment showed that the thermosetting polymer can accumulate stress during cycles of heating and mechanical loading during use. The results of the modeling and experiment are compared. The results have led to corrections in the way this model is applied to thermosetting polymers like the epoxy resin in this study. Considerable development has been observed in the area of applying fractional-order rheological models to describe the viscoelastic properties of miscellaneous materials in the last few decades together with the increasingly stronger adoption of fractional calculus. The fractional Maxwell model is the best-known non-integer-order rheological model. A weighted least-square approximation problem of the relaxation modulus by the fractional Maxwell model is considered when only the time measurements of the relaxation modulus corrupted by additive noises are accessible for identification. This study was dedicated to the determination of the model, optimal in the sense of the integral square weighted model quality index, which does not depend on the particular sampling points applied in the stress relaxation experiment. It is proved that even when the real description of the material relaxation modulus is entirely unknown, the optimal fractional Maxwell model parameters can be recovered from the relaxation modulus measurements recorded for sampling time points selected randomly according to respective randomization. The identified model is a strongly consistent estimate of the desired optimal model. The exponential convergence rate is demonstrated both by the stochastic convergence analysis and by the numerical studies. A simple scheme for the optimal model identification is given. Numerical studies are presented for the materials described by the short relaxation times of the unimodal Gauss-like relaxation spectrum and the long relaxation times of the Baumgaertel, Schausberger and Winter spectrum. These studies have shown that the appropriate randomization introduced in the selection of sampling points guarantees that the sequence of the optimal fractional Maxwell model parameters asymptotically converge to parameters independent of these sampling points. Summary: Telescopic truck crane is an under‐actuated mechanical system with three actuators controlling five outputs. Its complex structure, shape variation, uncertain parameters, elastic cables, and viscoelastic cylinders are great challenges in control design. This article proposes two adaptive robust controllers for such cranes. A control core assures robustness based on back‐stepping and Lyapunov stability. The adaptation is achieved by employing model‐reference adaptive and self‐tuning control approaches. Thus, the benefits of these adaptive techniques are introduced into the control systems. The application to a practical crane shows the effectiveness of the proposed controllers. The crane has robustness and adaptation despite the elasticity and friction of the load‐carrying cable, the viscoelasticity of the cylinders, the variation of crane parameters, and the presence of winds. Emulsion polymerization is an effective means of synthesizing high-molecular-weight polymers in order to reduce the consumption of fossil energy. This paper adopts isoamyl octanoate to replace white oil as the continuous phase of emulsion polymerization to synthesize the high molecular weight polyacrylamide emulsion RSE. S-80 and T-80 were chosen as the emulsifiers, and the test results showed that the HLB value is 5.72 when S-80/T-80 is 6.5. When S-80/T-80 is 6.5, the HLB value is 5.72. Water and isoamyl octanoate can produce ultra-low interfacial tension and stable arrangement in the interfacial membrane to form a stable emulsion, and the particle size is uniformly distributed in a normal manner. The test of the exothermic process of polymerization shows that the emulsion can be stabilized into nuclei, and polyacrylamide polymers with a molar mass of more than 18 million are obtained. The microstructure test observes that RSE molecules are in an aggregated state in the aqueous solution. A three-dimensional spatial network structure is formed, and the polymerization can be stabilized in a three-dimensional network structure after 120 °C, 170 s−1 shear, which still has good stability. After the variable shear performance test proved that the aqueous solution of RSE belongs to the typical non-Newtonian fluids, to shock test the viscoelasticity of different concentrations of RSE polymer, G′ > G″, the RSE solution to elasticity is dominant. In this paper, the capacity to form stable emulsions of isoamyl octanoate in the emulsion polymerization process is investigated to provide a basis for seeking the selection of a continuous phase with little environmental pollution and high functionality. Linear viscoelasticity is very important for chain-molecular fluids. The generalised Maxwell constitutive equation is classical in which the linear viscoelastic fluids consist of a series of spring and dashpot. It is significant to identify the generalised Maxwell fluid of linear viscoelasticity for n-hexadecane liquids through non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of small-strain amplitude oscillatory shear flows. For describing a characteristic of material viscoelasticity, the predicted relaxation modulus curves at different temperatures exhibit three regions: transition, rubbery, and flow. In this paper, propagation of homogeneous harmonic plane waves has been studied in an infinite homogeneous isotropic nonlocal viscoelastic rotating medium. Due to the rotational effects, two coupled plane waves, namely a quasi longitudinal wave and a quasi transverse wave are found in the medium under study. The dispersion equations is derived analytically and represented numerically. The problem of reflection of the quasi longitudinal wave at a stress-free solid half-space of the considered medium is also investigated. Various analytical results for the phase speed, attenuation coefficients, reflection coefficients and their corresponding energy ratios are depicted graphically for a particular model of interest to highlight the effect of nonlocal as well as rotational parameter. Multi-layered viscoelastic laminated nanocomposites have been widely used as a kind of representative active/passive vibration isolator and high-efficient damper in the practical applications of nanoengineering, due to their high energy dissipation, wide damping band and lower cost, and such composite structures often serve in a non-isothermal environment. In this work, an analytical study is conducted to investigate the size-dependent generalized thermoviscoelastic responses of multi-layered viscoelastic laminated nanocomposites. Governing equations of each homogeneous viscoelastic layer, accounting for imperfect interfacial conditions, are formulated in the context of the size-dependent generalized thermo-viscoelasticity model. Solutions accounting for non-idealized interfacial and proper boundary conditions are first presented to characterize the thermomechanical coupling of multi-layered viscoelastic laminated nanocomposites. Transient results of temperature, displacement and stresses in time domain can be achieved via Laplace inversion. Then the transient solutions obtained are applied to a one-dimensional bi-layered medium. It is found that properly selecting the nonlocal parameter and viscoelastic material constants ratios can maximally improve the heat isolation and avoid the larger harmful thermal stresses, especially at surface coating of the nanocomposites. The present investigation deals with the study of propagation of plane waves in a homogeneous, isotropic, nonlocal viscothermoelastic half space with temperature-dependent properties in the context of three-phase-lag (TPL) model. The Kelvin–Voigt model of linear viscoelasticity is employed to describe the viscoelastic nature of isotropic material. A set of coupled longitudinal waves and one independent transverse wave are found to travel with distinct speeds in the medium. Reflection coefficients and energy ratios of various reflected waves are presented when (1) a set of coupled longitudinal waves is made incident and (2) a transverse wave is made incident. The results for partition of the energy for various values of the angle of incidence are computed numerically and presented graphically for copper material. It has been verified that there is no dissipation of energy at the boundary surface during reflection. The effects of nonlocal parameter, viscosity and temperature dependent properties on reflection coefficients are depicted graphically. The accelerated testing methodology (ATM) developed by the authors is the methodology for predicting statistically long-term life of CFRP structures based on the viscoelasticity including the time-temperature superposition principle for matrix resin. The formulae of ATM are expressed as the product of static strength at room temperature, its dispersion, and the viscoelastic parameter of matrix resin that changes with time and temperature history. This methodology ATM was applied to the prediction of long-term creep failure life for unidirectional CFRP with heat-resistant epoxy resin as matrix under heat degradation in this study. Resin impregnated CFRP strands with heat-resistant epoxy resin were molded using a filament winding system as virgin specimens of unidirectional CFRP. Then, heat-degraded specimens were prepared by exposing the virgin specimens under acceleration conditions determined based on the time-temperature superposition principle for chemical deterioration assuming the condition of practical temperature 110°C and period 10 years. Second, the creep strengths of virgin and heat-degraded CFRP strands were statistically predicted based on ATM and the effect of heat degradation on the long-term life of CFRP strands was evaluated. As results, it was cleared that when the creep strength of CFRP strands undergoes thermal aging at the practical condition, in addition to the strength decrease to time due to the viscoelasticity of the resin, a comparable decrease in static strength and increase in this scatter occur. BACKGROUND: The biocompatible amphiphilic silk fibroin, extracted from domesticated silkworms, can adsorb at the oil--water interface and form elastic interfacial layers. In this study, three surfactants (cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, the nonionic polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate, and the anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate) were selected to investigate, through interfacial shear rheology, the influences of surfactants on the interfacial viscoelasticity and stability of silk fibroin at the interfaces between water and two different oils. RESULTS: The presence of surfactant prolongs the equilibration time and enhances the interfacial elastic modulus and toughness of the interfacial silk fibroin layers, especially at the nonpolar dodecane--water interface. However, when the surfactant exceeds a critical concentration, the shear modulus and stability of interfacial silk fibroin layers begin to decrease due to the competitive adsorption of surfactant molecules and the weakening of the protein network. Owing to electrostatic interactions, the ionic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium dodecyl sulfate can form more hydrophobic complexes with silk fibroin, which results in higher shear moduli than for silk fibroin and silk fibroin--polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate mixture. CONCLUSION: Both the surfactant type and oil polarity play important roles in the adsorption, shear viscoelasticity, and stability of silk fibroin at the oil--water interface. Enhanced interactions between a silk fibroin--surfactant mixture and the oil phase delay the equilibration of the adsorption layers but strengthen the stability of interfacial layers. AbstractThe New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) essentially rests on observational information concerning displacements measured in selected positions at the inner surface of shotcrete tunnel shells. The combination of these measurements with advanced material and structural mechanics, in the course of so-called hybrid methods, have successfully delivered, for more than 20 years, practically relevant estimations of internal and external forces and corresponding degrees of utilization. The reliability of the latter, however, may crucially depend on the used material model. Based on a recently proposed analytical structural mechanics model [Acta Mech 233, 2989–3019 (2022)], and focusing on the benchmark example of measurement cross section MC1452 of the Sieberg tunnel, driven in the 1990s in Miocene clay marl, the present paper compares the estimations of forces and degrees of utilization arising from differently refined constitutive concepts, namely (i) aging elasticity, (ii) aging linear viscoelasticity, and (iii) aging nonlinear viscoelasticity. It turns out that only the consideration of aging nonlinear viscoelastic material behavior provides access to realistic values for the degree of utilization, being lower than one. AbstractThis paper studied the adhesive contact between a viscoelastic sphere and a rigid plane, and presented a dimensionless first-order differential equation to directly describe the relationship between the applied load and the contact radius. By adopting a combination strategy, the singularity of Muller’s dimensionless first-order differential equation was avoided well. To study the dependence of the pull-off force on the initial applied load, a table-based linear and logarithmic interpolation method was presented to determine the contact radius at the pull-off. The dependence of the square root (ζmax) of the ratio of the effective adhesion work at the upper bound to the equilibrium adhesion work on Muller’s parameter β and material constant n was deduced theoretically. And the relationship between the contact radius at the upper bound and ζmax was also deduced theoretically. In addition, the ratio of the pull-off force to the maximum pull-off force was determined to be cubic function of the ratio of the contact radius at the pull-off to that at the upper bound numerically. If β, n and the initial applied load were given, utilizing these relationships, the pull-off force and the maximum pull-off force could be predicted well. The viscoelasticity of a carbon nanotube (CNT)-laden air–water interface was characterized using two different experimental methods. The first experimental method used a Langmuir-Pockels (LP) trough coupled with a pair of oscillating barriers. The second method is termed the Bicone-Trough (BT) method, where a LP trough was custom-built and fit onto a rheometer equipped with a bicone fixture to standardize the preparation and conditioning of a particle-laden interface especially at high particle coverages. The performance of both methods was evaluated by performing Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis to calculate the signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Overall, the rheometer-based BT method offered better strain control and considerably higher SNRs compared to the Oscillatory Barriers (OB) method that oscillated barriers with relatively limited positional and speed control. For a CNT surface coverage of 165 mg/m2 and a frequency of 100 mHz, the interfacial shear modulus obtained from the OB method increased from 39 to 57 mN/m as the normal strain amplitude increased from 1 to 3%. No linear viscoelastic regime was experimentally observed for a normal strain as small as 0.5%. In the BT method, a linear regime was observed below a shear strain of 0.1%. The interfacial shear modulus decreased significantly from 96 to 2 mN/m as the shear strain amplitude increased from 0.025 to 10%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the dynamic behavior of a two-dimensional droplet adhering to a wall in Poiseuille flow at low Reynolds numbers, in a system where one of the phases is viscoelastic represented by a Giesekus model. The Cahn–Hilliard Phase-Field method is used to capture the interface between the two phases. The presence of polymeric molecules alters the viscoelastic drop's deformation over time, categorizing it into two stages before contact line depinning. In the first stage, the viscoelastic droplet deforms faster, while in the second stage, the Newtonian counterpart accelerates and its deformation outpaces the viscoelastic droplet. The deformation of viscoelastic drop is retarded significantly in the second stage with increasing Deborah number De. The viscous bending of viscoelastic drop is enhanced on the receding side for small De, but it is weakened by further increase in De. On the advancing side, the viscous bending is decreased monotonically for Ca < 0.25 with a non-monotonic behavior for Ca = 0.25. The non-monotonic behavior on the receding side is attributed to the emergence of outward pulling stresses in the vicinity of the receding contact line and the inception of strain-hardening at higher De, while the reduction in the viscous bending at the advancing side is the result of just strain-hardening. Finally, when the medium is viscoelastic, the viscoelasticity suppresses the droplet deformation on both receding and advancing sides, and this effect becomes more pronounced with increasing De. Stalk lodging contributes to significant crop yield losses. Therefore, understanding the biomechanical strength and structural rigidity of grain stalks can contribute to improving stalk lodging resistance in crops. From the structural constituents of the stalk, the rind provides the principal structure, supporting cells against tension and bending loads. In this work, the biomechanical and viscoelastic behavior of the rind from the internodes of two sweet sorghum varieties (Della and REDforGREEN (RG)), grown in two different growing seasons, were evaluated by three-point micro-bending tests using a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). In addition, the chemical composition of rinds and the microfibril angle (MFA) of the cell wall were determined using XRD. The results revealed that the biomechanical behavior of Della varieties was stiffer and more resistant to loads than that of RG varieties. Two features of the rind biomechanical properties, flexural modulus (FM) and flexural strength (FS), showed a significant reduction for RG. Particularly, a reduction in FS of 16–37% and in FM of 22–41% were detected for RG1. Changes in the stalks' rind biomechanical properties were attributed to cell wall components. Total lignin and glucan/cellulose contents were positively correlated with the FM and FS of the rind. Subsequently, an increase in the two cell wall components drove an increase in stiffness. Understanding the viscoelastic properties of EPP foams is of crucial importance for their use in industrial applications. However, mechanical testing of polymeric foams is challenging due to the difficulties that arise from their morphology. For this reason, here currently available DMA methods using a single drive and a multi-drive rheometer as well as multiple loading directions are investigated in detail. Experimental challenges are highlighted and discussed with regard to foam-specific properties. Special focus is laid on the influence of compressive pre-strain. Based on the results, guidelines to perform reproducible DMA tests on the investigated type of material are derived. In addition, the results give deeper insight into the deformation behavior of bead foams at small strain levels and reveal an early onset of the transition from linear to plateau regime. In this paper, layered periodic foundations (LPFs) are numerically examined for their responses to longitudinal and transverse modes in the time and frequency domains. Three different unit-cells, i.e., 2-layer, 4-layer, and 6-layer unit-cells, comprising concrete/rubber, concrete/rubber/steel/rubber, and concrete/rubber/steel/rubber/lead/rubber materials, respectively, are taken into account. Also, the viscoelasticity behavior of the rubber is modeled with two factors, i.e., a frequency-independent (FI) loss factor and a linear frequency-dependent (FD) loss factor. Following the extraction of the complex dispersion curves and the identification of the band gaps (BGs), the simulations of wave transmission in the time and frequency domains are performed using the COMSOL software. Subsequent parametric studies evaluate the effects of the rubber viscoelasticity models on the dispersion curves and the wave transmission for the longitudinal and transverse modes. The results show that considering the rubber viscoelasticity enhances the wave attenuation performance. Moreover, the transverse-mode damping is more sensitive to the viscoelasticity model than its longitudinal counterpart. The microstructure of wormlike micelles (WLM) directly affects the rheological properties of their solutions. Investigating the structure–property relationships of WLM has long been a popular topic for researchers who have developed theoretical and empirical models to describe their viscoelastic behavior. All these models rely on a collection of characteristic "length" parameters that are often difficult to estimate using relatively simple rheological tests. In particular, the micelle stiffness, as described by the persistence length, can be difficult to measure experimentally, while being very impactful on the bulk rheology of WLM solutions. Here, an array of inorganic salts (NaCl, LiCl, MgCl2, NaBr, NaI, and Na2SO4) have been used to induce wormlike micelle formation in an aqueous solution of the surfactant sodium lauryl ether sulfate. Ion dissociation/association with the surfactant head groups and the hydrogen bond network of the water alters the effective stiffness of the micelles, allowing for an estimation of the stiffness using three different methods: (1) small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements, (2) oscillatory rheological measurements, and (3) steady rheological measurements with a thermodynamic packing parameter model. Each of these methods are then compared and shown to be consistent with each other for the micelle solutions tested. The consistency of the results across all the measurements suggests that the approach used in this study, which estimates micelle parameters using steady shear rheology and a thermodynamic model, could provide a simpler and more accessible method for estimating micelle parameters in a wide range of surfactant systems. Elastomers are widely used in electronics and electrical devices, either as insulators or transducers. The insulation and actuation performance of elastomers are highly susceptible to their dielectric strength. Among the factors that influence the dielectric strength of elastomers, material viscoelasticity is an important factor that needs further investigation. Since the material viscoelasticity is often characterized by rate-dependent behaviors, we present two different sample configurations to experimentally examine the electrical and mechanical rate dependence of the dielectric strength of VHB 4905 elastomers. At pre-stretch ratio of 4, the improvement of the dielectric strength is about 30% from voltage ramp of 50 V/s to 800 V/s. Particularly, with an in-house biaxial test platform, the effect of the stretching rate on the dielectric strength is examined for the first time. The improvement of the dielectric strength is about 35% from stretching rate of 0.1 mm/s to 5 mm/s. Moreover, a dielectric strength predictor based on configurational stress is adopted to describe the experimental data. A systematic analytical study of the mathematical properties of the previously constructed nonlinear model of the shear flow of thixotropic viscoelastic-plastic media, which takes into account the mutual influence of the deformation process and structure evolution, is carried out. A set of two nonlinear differential equations describing shear at a constant rate and stress relaxation was obtained. Assuming six material parameters and an (increasing) material function that control the model are arbitrary, the basic properties of the families of stress-strain curves at constant strain rates, stress relaxation curves (Part 2) and creep curves (Part 3) generated by the model, and the features of the evolution of the structuredness under these types of loading were analytically studied. The dependences of these curves on time, shear rate, stress level, initial strain and initial structuredness of material (for example, degree of physical crosslinking), as well as on material parameters and function governing the model, were studied. Several indicators of the model applicability are found, which are convenient to check with experimental data. It was examined what effects typical for viscoelastic-plastic media can be described by the model and what unusual effects (properties) are generated by structuredness changes in comparison to typical stress-strain, relaxation and creep curves of structurally stable materials. The analysis proved the ability of the model to describe behavior of not only liquid-like viscoelastoplastic media, but also solid-like (thickening, hardening, hardened) media: the effects of creep, relaxation, recovery, a number of typical properties of experimental relaxation curves, creep and stress-strain curves at a constant rate, strain rate and strain hardening, flow under constant stress, etc. The first part of the article is devoted to formulation of the model and preparation of basis for the second part: the proof of the uniqueness and stability of the equilibrium point of the nonlinear equations set, analytical study of the equilibrium point dependence on all material parameters, possible types of phase portraits and the properties of integral and phase curves of the model.
